English — “didto

Part of speech & basic meaning
• Locative demonstrative / adverb of place
• Means “over there / in that distant place” — far from both speaker and listener

Contracted form
• No standard contraction. Very rapid speech may shorten to “’to,” but correct form is didto.

Typical sentence position
• Follows the verb: Nag-puyo sila didto = “They live over there.”
• Can open an emphatic clause: Didto nagsugod ang istorya.
• Works with prepositions for larger areas: sa didto (“over there in/at …”).

Common collocations
didto ra – only over there
adto ta didto – let’s go over there
didto sa… – over there in/at …
didto lang – stay right over there
gikan didto – from over there

Detailed usage
• Use didto when the place is distant from both speaker and listener or generally “over yonder.”
• Spatial set:
dinhi = exactly here (speaker)
diri = around here
diha = there (at listener)
anha = toward listener
anhi = toward speaker
didto = over there (far from both)

Common mistakes
• Mixing didto with diha (near listener) or dinhi (here).
• Forgetting sa with named places: say didto sa Cebu (“over there in Cebu”).
• Using didto before a verb in neutral statements — verb-first is more natural unless focusing.
